Elements of a setup (the orders below are not to be altered): 1-Neck relief. There should be a .005"~.010" distance between the 6th string anf the 8th fret when you press the string at the 1st and last frets. For basses, it's .005~.020" relief. 2-String action/height. This includes filing the nut slots and saddles, and adjusting the bridge/saddle height for each string. Every player has a different preference for string action. The rule of thumb is to get them as low as possible without fret buzz. Bear in mind that the same guitar/bass with higher string action produces better resonance than when its action is low. It's a matter of compromise and finding the best balance between playability and sound. 3-Intonation. Move the saddle towards the neck if your 12th fretted note is flat while the open note is correctly tuned. Move the saddle towards the end strap bolt if your 12th fretted note is sharp. 4- Pickup heights. The guideline is that with conventional pickups, the distance between the strings and your pickups' polepieces should not be smaller than 1/8" when you press the strings at the last fret. Use the 2 screws on both sides of the pickup to get a basic height, then turn the pickups' polepieces (eg. the 6 screws on a Les Paul's pickup) to acquire even volume balance across the strings. Beware that pickup adjustments is greatly relevant to your playing style and your amp setting. For example, set the bass side a little lower if you attack strings 4,5,6 harder than the other 3. Set the bass side a little higher if you have a bright, trebly setting on your amp. Bear in mind that pickups like Fender Lace Sensors can be closer to the strings without producing string pull and false harmonics because their magnets are less powerful. ***It's recommended to do your set-up with new strings. The tension and intonation properties of old strings are not that good.
