Basically any les paul standard reissue before 2003 model used the wood combination of indian rosewood/fingerboard, soft or hard maple/mapletop, s.american mahogany/body+neck. After 2003 model, they have madagascar rosewood/fingerboard, eastern hard maple/mapletop, s.american mahogany/body+neck, for closer vintage les paul spec. The original vintage les paul had brazillian rosewood/fingerboard, eastern hard maple/maple top, honduras hahogany/body+neck. today, brazillian and honduras are hard to obtain. i work for some guitar shop and I have seen the quality of gibson guitars for many years,it seems to me that the regular gibson usa products have been made a little better since around 2002 and the historic custom shop guitars have been made a little better since around 2003. The products before then and after are basically almost just the same, just the post-2002/2003 products look to me a somehow little less sloppy made and more attention paid made. this was perhaps because the induction of better machinery at the factory or policy change or just the time and their experience got better. the weight of reissues vary depending on models. gibson usa has been drilling some holes in les pauls since around 1982 to reduce the weight. The pre historic reissue were made at the regular gibson usa factory until around 1993 so they may have or mostlikely have those weight relieved holes. (sorry, i am sure for all the regular les pauls but can't remember exactly for the reissue from 1983 to 1993. please read mike slubowsky's perfect article about them on les paul forum. here it is. www.lespaulforum.com ) any historic les pauls has no weight relieved holes in their body like the original and especially for '59 and '60 reissues after around 2002, the custom shop only uses the mahogany block weight less than 9 pounds(4 kg) so the reissue made after that are usually lighter comfortable ones like the original vintages.however this 9 pounds rule only apply to '59 and '60 only and the heavier mahogany will be used to the rest of models. i heard that no.1 is '59 and '60. then no.2 quality is for '58 and goldtops and more heavier ones are for les paul custom and jr and special and others.
